The Perfect Weekend “Getaway” From Kansas City, or Anywhere!
Getaway Cabins in the Ozark Highlands
Tired of the hustle and bustle in the city? Need to get away from family, friends, colleagues, or ALL of the above for a few days? That’s exactly how my Fiance and I felt when we decided to book Getaway House for a weekend away with a couple of friends. As featured on “Shark Tank,” Getaway House lets you (quite literally) get out of the busy city, unplug for a few days, get into nature, and get the official “Tiny Home” experience off the grid that’s been all the rave the past few years.
After living in Seattle for a few years and having almost immediate access to the Great Outdoors (45 minutes in any direction to be exact) I was stoked to find out that we had these cabins less than 2 hours from Kansas City. I used to go camping almost every weekend when I lived there, and this was the perfect getaway to unplug and become one with nature again.
If you’re coming from the metro Kansas City area, Getaway texted us 2 hours before our intended check-in time with the address we needed to plug in to Google Maps. The text said it was very possible we would lose service as we traveled closer to the cabins, and it was highly recommended to plug the directions in beforehand to avoid getting lost. We didn’t have any issues getting to the cabins, but we DID lose service on the way there and service was spotty, if not nonexistent once we arrived. I really appreciated this. I mean, the whole point is to “Get Away,” right? You don’t realize how connected you are to the outside world until you can’t access any of the apps on your phone.
Getaway did an AMAZING job greeting us as well as our pups when we arrived. They had bowls, snacks and doggie bags ready at the cabin so our furry friends could have a relaxing time as well. Clear and concise communication was left at the cabin for us, leaving no stone unturned when it came to having all our questions answered. They even had a coloring kit for kiddos if you so choose to embark on this kind of journey with your children! S’mores and other delectable items were available for a small additional price to help make the experience more relaxing and enjoyable for all parties.
Getaway also left recommendations on things to do in the surrounding area, all within 40 minutes or so from the cabins. We all brought our paddle boards though, so we decided to find a boat ramp at Truman Lake about 20 minutes away to get out on the water for a bit before the storm moved into town!

This was short lived and we were maybe a little overambitious getting out on the water with all the thunder and lightning we had around us. Definitely don’t recommend getting in the water if a storm is rolling in, and there are docks surrounding you with metal in the water! We had Quirk Raspberry Rocket Pop Seltzers to help keep things calm, cool and collected as we packed up our boards and headed back to the cabin with my amazing Fiance being our DD (Do not drink and drive!) HIGHLY recommend this flavor, by the way! It’s the perfect refresher for summer time.
Once we arrived back at the cabin, it was almost time for dinner! We took our time cleaning up (yes, the cabins have showers,) chillin’ with the pups, and enjoying the quiet nothingness in the comfy bed with a nice, hot cup of coffee and a book to read.
Haley, my Fiance, was prepping the potatoes, chicken apple sausages and fruit, while I was getting the fire started. Getaway provides firewood, fire starter and lighters for you, which is nice because the nearest Walmart was 30 miles away. The firewood and fire starter is provided at additional cost, but for the convenience we felt it was worth it to go ahead and utilize what we needed to enjoy our evening. The also make sure the firewood is stowed away in a dry place next to the picnic table so you don’t have to worry about it getting wet!
Prepping dinner was as easy as 1, 2, 3, since the cabin had a 2 burner stove-top, plenty of counter space, a mini fridge to store food and a sink to clean the dishes up in. Like I said, we had chicken apple sausages (the Aidell’s brand is the best and I have them linked above) with potatoes, fruit and chips and salsa as our appetizer.
Our friends, Amanda and Andrew, joined us at our cabin for dinner and they had a sausage and shrimp boil over the fire which looked amazing! It started pouring again, so they ended up having to bring their shrimp and sausage boil inside to finish off on the stove-top after a failed attempt of trying to keep the fire going. Thank goodness we had the stove top in the cabin!
Dinner was excellent. The best part, was it finally stopped raining so we were able to salvage the fire and get it going again! We topped off dinner with s’mores, some more Raspberry Rocket Pop Seltzers made by Boulevard Brewing Company, a local brewery in Kansas City and great conversation with some of our best friends.
After dessert, it started raining again and the fire was dwindling. Because of this, we headed back inside to finish off the night with some indoor card games. There’s nothing like a good ole’ fashioned game of Uno! and Exploding Kittens! If you haven’t played Exploding Kittens, I HIGHLY recommend it, it’s such a fun game to have on deck! P.S. If you’re wondering if I won, I didn’t!
It was an EXCELLENT weekend overall with our Getaway Cabin in the Ozark Highlands. My Fiance and I went with our two dogs and highly recommend headed here for a weekend retreat away from the city if you feel you need to unplug for a weekend. The pups loved it and we felt we had everything we needed to enjoy our stay, thanks to the help from our counterparts at Getaway. If we forgot anything important, they had a Getaway General Store, hosted by Walmart, which had anything you could possibly forget on a trip, ready for purchase with the swipe of your card. They also had fun games and trinkets as well.

If you plan on bringing your fluffy friends, they do charge a $50 additional fee. We didn’t mind this because we try to take our dogs everywhere we go. If you see our pups below, I don’t think they mind going along with us either! The space is a little tight with two dogs, so if you have two, just a heads up that it can get tight with two humans and two dogs in the cabin! If you don’t mind like us, then you should be fine. They have plenty of hiking trails and space outside to walk, and they also have an outdoor leash tied to the picnic table for your furry friends so they can enjoy the outdoors as well. Just make sure they have their flea and tick medication, because we were all getting covered in ticks out there! Our dogs take Bravecto, as prescribed by our vet, and we also had flea and tick spray that we think works great as well.
Again, we highly recommend unplugging and getting away for the weekend at the Getaway Cabins in the Ozark Highlands. If you need to unwind, take a breather from the city, or just want a romantic getaway with your partner, this is the perfect place for you. They have excellent, unparalleled customer service, with the ability to text them whenever you need anything, and they provide everything you need in order to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

It all begins with an idea.
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you have a creative project to share with the world, or maybe you just want to take really dope a** pictures with your friends. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference. That’s why (I believe) having all the right gear can make the biggest difference. I used to be a Canon girl when I first started photography, but since then I’ve transitioned into using all Sony products, and I truly believe their camera products are the best out there. Below is a list of all the camera gear I’ve used and acquired over the course of the past year that’s helped transform my photography and videography into what it is today.
